Many individuals prefer organic gardening, as they fear the possible long-term effects the original source doctor gardening on their health as well as the environment from the many commercial pesticides and fertilizers that are used. Also, most methods of organic horticulture are fairly inexpensive. Read on to learn a few tips if you are thinking about growing your own organic garden.
Pay attention to how you lay sod. Before laying the sod, the soil must be prepared. Pull all the weeds and loosen the soil so the new roots can take easily. Using a light but firm touch, compact the soil until it is flat. Now make sure the soil is thoroughly dampened. Avoid laying your sod in straight rows with all of the seams lining up. Instead, stagger the rows for a more pleasing visual effect. Even out the surface of the sod by firming it down flat, filling any available gaps with a handful of dirt. Keep the sod moist and avoid walking on it until it is well-rooted, usually two to three weeks. To keep your plants from getting shocked, you need to gradually introduce them to changes in temperature and conditions. Try to place them in the new area for a couple of hours at a time the first day. Throughout the week, you should leave your plants out for a little longer each day. By the weekend, the plants can make that big move without a problem! Look for the variants of a plant that offer the highest yield. Frequently, a hybrid that is able to deal with extreme temperatures will bring higher yields than the more traditional variety of a plant. When winter comes around, save some plants by putting them in the house. Perhaps save the most resistant or expensive plants. When you dig up the plant, carefully avoid the roots then place it in a container. When fall is here, you need to plant autumn edibles. Try something different by planing kale or lettuce inside a pumpkin, instead of using the planter pots you traditionally use. Slice a hole around the stem, and pull the pumpkin top out. Then remove the guts and use Wilt-Pruf to cover the insides and prevent rot. Once this is done, you are ready to plant! Make sure to pre-soak seeds, preferably in a dark location. Simply place a handful of seeds in a container, cover the seeds up with water, and stash it away. This will give your seeds a good start by making sure they have plenty of water, which they need to sprout. The seeds will be better able to survive and grow up. Keep your fragile shrubs protected from the winter weather. Any potted shrubs should be sheltered in the winter from cold weather. Tie the tops of the canes together; then take a sheet and cover the wigwam loosely. This is a much better method, instead of putting the plastic wrap around the plant. It allows proper air circulation that can prevent rotting. Boiling away unwanted weeds is an odd, but productive method used in many gardens. This is a safe way to eliminate weeds, as this will not damage the soil. Carefully pour boiling water right on the weeds, but be careful not to pour it on the plants you want. The water will kill the weeds by destroying the roots and if poured directly on the weeds, will prevent them from growing back. Broad-spectrum pesticides should be avoided in your garden. These pesticides can also kill useful insects that eat your pests. Beneficial insects are more susceptible to toxic pesticides than their annoying counterparts, so a broad-spectrum pesticide could kill all of the good bugs first, allowing the population of bad pests to multiply. Your problem will only get worse and you will find yourself using more pesticides. It is simple to prepare your garden for perennial flowers. Slice under the grass with a spade, flip the layer you have lifted over, and spread three inches of wood chips on top. Wait two weeks, then dig in and plant the new perennials. Learn to work efficiently. By having your tools in one location, you will not spend hours looking for them. Set up the tools you will need for your day prior to hitting the garden, then put them away neatly at the end of your horticulture session. Invest in a tool belt or wear pants that have lots of pockets. Pine is a mulch that is great. Some plants have a naturally high acidic level, and therefore like acidic soil. Pine needles are an excellent form of mulch for these types of plants. Go ahead and cover the beds you have with needles a couple of inches and while they decompose, they actually disperse some acid into the soil. You could simply make a new perennials garden in a couple easy steps. Cut under the dirt with a spade and turn it over. Next, cover the area with three to four inches of organic wood chips. Let this set for a few weeks before you plant your perennials. You need to mulch your flowerbed and garden using at least 3 inches worth of organic material. The mulch retains moisture, enriches the soil, and prevents weeds from growing. Mulch also makes your garden appear neat and well cared for. Organic horticulture is healthier. You won't be exposing your plants - and yourself to toxins or chemicals. Use the tips you just read to help you start planting your organic garden. You will also see more animals in your garden, because organic gardens are more attuned to nature.
